What is a Freshaterian?

Freshaterian: Someone who eats fresh non processed food.

You may have heard of Vegetarians, and Vegans and even admired their health conscious way of living. But what do you call someone who is just as health conscious but also eats meat?

What do you call someone who avoids processed foods, prefers slow food over fast food, eats organic fruits and vegetables as often as possible, eats hormone free, antibiotic free, grass fed meats?

What do you call someone who eats whole grains and complex carbohydrates, avoids sodas, artificial colorings, artificial flavorings, fat substitutes, etc.?

We call them Freshaterians.

How Did Something So Simple Get So Complicated?

Eating should be simple. Go out to the garden, pick some fresh vegetables, take a walk down to the river and catch a fish and on the way back, pick some fresh fruit and berries. No calorie counting, no worries over too many carbohydrates, etc. Ah, the good old days, where have they gone?

Eating fresh can be simple. You don't even have to grow your own vegetables, pick your own fruit or catch your own fish to start eating fresh and eating healthy. But you could do all of that. In fact we all could. Unfortunately most of our rivers are polluted, we might get in trouble picking the berries and fruit along the path, and the average home gardener uses more pesticides and herbicides than most farmers. If you're using none, you can be sure what your neighbor spays on his lawn is drifting into your garden.

So what's a Freshaterian to do? I found a good start might be buying a little book by Michael Pollan. Pollan wrote "The Omnivore's Dilemma" and "In Defense of Food". His latest book is called , "Food Rules, An Eater's Manual". It's just 140 easy to read pages filled with simple practical advice. Pollan has assembled 64 easy to remember rules that if you follow will turn you into a Freshaterian and quite possibly change your life.

What are the rules? "The whiter the bread the sooner you're dead." "It's not food if it arrived through the window of your car." "Eat only foods that will eventually rot." Simple easy to remember sayings based on common easy to follow wisdom that will make sense to anyone who is wanting to live a more healthy less processed life.

If you like "Food Rules" you no doubt will enjoy his other books. Pollan is not a doctor or a scientist, he's a journalist who has devoted his attention to the disastrous state of our food supply and our eating habits. His work is worth a read, and at least some of those "Rules" are worth committing to memory.
